In this research, a three-phase bi-level environo-economic optimization approach forbiomass-powered systems is introduced. 40 scenarios are evaluated by considering eightbiomasses and five technologies under two strategies. The multi-objective optimizationcoupled with multiple criteria decision-making technique is used in this methodology.Four cost and pollution objectives as the functions of operating parameters are optimized todeliver optimal values. They have been selected to explicitly express environmental andeconomic sides of the biomass-fueled systems. At the first level of this approach minimumcost and pollution of numerous scenarios along with their optimal operating parameters arederived. At the second level, the alternative optimal scenarios by multiple criteria decisionmakingtechniques are specified.This research aims to gain two targets. First, development of a bi-level method foroptimization of a biomass-fueled energy system without case specificity. Second,prioritization of the alternative scenarios with related optimal parameters. The methodologycan be extended to accept nonrenewable fuels or energy conversion technologies.
