DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF BWR FUEL DEBRIS FILTER

A Westinghouse perspective on the importance ofmitigating debris failures in BWR fuel is given. The meansof improving filtration of the coolant water inside the fuelassembly are considered and reasons for targeting thinmetal wires are given. A new test methodology fordevelopment of an improved BWR fuel debris filter ispresented and demonstrated for Westinghouse’s currentBWR fuel filter product. Design improvements showingreduction in debris passing the filter by more than afactor of 10 have been identified and are discussed. Thesenew design features will be introduced in WestinghouseBWR reload fuel deliveries in a stepwise approach in2020 and 2021.
