CONSIDERATIONS IN RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR SMRs − THE ROLE OF THE IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is theworld's centre for cooperation in the nuclear field,promoting the safe, sustainable and peaceful use of nucleartechnology. During the development of, and in view of, thefirst deployment of any nuclear technology, dueconsideration of the management of radioactive waste isessential to success. The emergence of Small ModularReactors (SMRs) presents an opportunity to demonstrate anew paradigm, in which effective radioactive wastemanagement is integral to the earliest considerations. Thispaper will set out aspects of the IAEA’s current workprogramme in both SMRs and Radioactive WasteManagement (RWM) and move on to present a series ofconsiderations for future connectivity between the topics.Thanks to its convening capability, neutrality and globalreach, the IAEA is ideally positioned to support effectivecooperation in these areas. Future planned work at theIAEA on RWM for SMRs provides a valuable focal pointfor SMR developers.
