Wave and current are one of the promising alternative green energy resources. With a cross-flow horizontal-axis marine current turbine (straight-bladed Darrieus type) as the analysis object, considering the environmental loads and the geometry parameters of the hydroturbine system as well as the effect on the performance of the power generator, the power capacity momentum theory, the strength failure theory, on site test and numerical simulation methods are used as a failure assessment method for the cross-flow water turbines (CFWT). The main contents are the critical parameters analyzed of power generating capacity, inflow velocity factor, installation dimension of the devices, ultimate bearing capacity etc. Then, the simulation models of CFWT based on the power output and strength failure check under the environmental load are developed and the failure modes of the device under different load configurations are identified. In the end, some failure assessment advices for CFWT designs conforming to the demand of engineering practice are provided.
