Composite Coatings Formed on PEO-layers Using Fluoroparaffin Materials

Using the method of plasma electrolytic oxidation and fluorocarbon materials the composite coatings have been formed on MA8 magnesium alloy. The localized electrochemical method showed that PEO-coating treatment with fluoroparaffins provides the high protection of the material during its exposure to the chloride-containing medium. SEM-EDX analysis showed the high fluorine concentration in the outer layer of the composite coating. It was established that presence of the fluoroparaffin layer provides the composite coating with hydrophobic properties, as it indicated by the contact angle increase from 37 up to 122–137. Analysis of the results of scratch test data and tribological measurements revealed the mechanical properties improvement as a result of composite coating formation.
