In July 2018, a disastrous storm along Osaka Bay, Japan, was caused bythe Typhoon Jebi. The maximum height of observed sea level includingstorm surge was 3.29 m at Osaka. This value exceeded the highest recordat Osaka caused Typhoon Nancy in 1961, whereas the maximuminstantaneous wind speed in Jebi was smaller than Nancy, whoseatmospheric pressure at the typhoon center was lower than that of Jebi.This study firstly analyzed the characteristics of Typhoons Jebi andNancy based on observed data, and conducted numerical simulations ofthe storm surge under scenarios for all data on pressure, wind andtyphoon radius. The result shows why, during the typhoon landing, theJebi which caused greater storm surges was likely generated by smallerthe radius of maximum wind speed R_(max).
