During its lifetime, marine structures may be exposed to accidentalloadings such as collision and explosion, as well as environmentalloadings such as slamming, sloshing and green water. Such loadings cancause damage to structures. Therefore, to minimize such damages tostructures the advanced and robust design guidelines should bedeveloped. Among these loads, in this study explosions induced animpulsive pressure loading containing a rapid increase in pressure and ashort duration that can cause serious casualties, property losses andmarine pollutions are considered. This study proposes a practical methodbased on a single degree of freedom system which has been employed inDNVGL code, considering the effect of strain rate, and numericalanalysis method using the commercial ABAQUS software package forexplosion assessments of marine structures. Validation of the numericalmethod is performed through comparisons with relevant pulse pressuretest data available in the open literature, and a good correlation betweenthem is achieved. A rigorous parametric study was then performed basedon the validated numerical models. The simple yet accurate formulationsfor predicting structural response were empirically derived, and they areexpected to be used for the prediction of the damage extent of marinestructures due to explosion loads.
