The field assisted sintering technique (FAST, also known as SPS) has been a growing field of interestfor the production of hard-to-sinter materials over the last two decades. Industrial requirement of thetechnique indicates that components need to be produced to near net-shape for application, or belimited only to low aspect ratio discs. Here, we overview the current state of the art in net and nearnet-shape production processes tailored for FAST with particular emphasis on the potential of shapeddie and other alternative routes to produce components. Using Ti 48Al 2Cr 2Nb we have investigatedthe ease of use of a complex, multi-punch, shaped die to produce a 250 mm diameter generic shapedring and have demonstrated the difficulties associated with what may be considered as a state-of-theart production method.
