In general-purpose parallel and distributed systems, performanceof the protected and virtualized user-level communications andsynchronizations is the most crucial issue to realize efficientexecution environments. We proposed a novel high-speed user-levelcommunication and synchronization scheme “Memory-BasedCommunication Facilities (MBCF) “for a general-purpose system withan off-the-shelf communication-hardware. The MBCF realizes the directremote-memory-accesses in user-task-space and offers programmers andcompilers a large shared-memory space. This paper describes outlines andcharacteristics of the MBCF and evaluates basic performance of theMBCF/Ether which is the first sample implementation with 100BASE-TXinterfaces. The evaluation tells that its peak bandwidth at half-duplexmode is 11.2 Mbyte/sec and its round-trip latency is 49 μsec. Finally, we introduce a brand-new remote cache scheme “AsymmetricDistributed Shared Memory (ADSM)”, which is suitable for the MBCFand optimizing compilers, and show the effects of optimization methodsfor the ADSM
