The application of CMAC based intelligent agents in the detectionof previously unseen computer viruses

This paper describes an ongoing research project at the UniversityOf Southampton investigating the application of the Cerebellar ModelArticulation Controller (CMAC) algorithm in the detection of previouslyunseen computer viruses. This paper will provide a brief introduction tocomputer viruses and hypothesise about the emergence of more intelligenttargeted viruses. Existing methods of virus detection are discussed andthe requirement for more intelligent detection methods is highlighted.An alternative method of detection is proposed based on the applicationof the CMAC algorithm in mapping the differences between redundantsystem components and the state of the system. Initial results arepresented together with a series of recommendations for further research
