Typical case studies are reported in this paper addressing theapplication of the IEEE 519-1992 guidelines to mitigate harmonics. Thestudy discusses possible techniques to mitigate harmonics generated bynonlinear loads, especially variable frequency drives (VFDs), also knownas adjustable speed drives (ASDs). The paper intends to show how one canapply IEEE 519-1992 within an industrial or commercial environment tominimize the effect of harmonics on the electrical system in a givenplant. It is shown that the IEEE 519-1992 methodology can be applied atthe point where a nonlinear load (ASDs in particular) connects to the ACpower system. This would lead to solving harmonic problems within afacility in addition to making sure the IEEE 519-1992 standards arebeing met at the point of utility metering. Test results showing theperformance of a new passive filter configuration which reduces theharmonic currents being injected back into the power system network tomeet IEEE 519-1992 standards at the input terminals of the ASD are alsopresented
