The author provides a regulator's view of nuclear power in the US.He examines what utilities and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)can do to improve human safety performance. He concludes that the futureof the nuclear industry clearly hinges upon improving the safety ofexisting plants. Licensees must improve human performance by promoting asafety-oriented attitude and environment, and by seeking excellence. TheNRC must be perceived by the public as ensuring that plants are designedand operated in accordance with rigorous safety standards and, whennecessary, that such standards are vigorously enforced
