Stochastic fluid models in the analysis of access regulation inhigh speed networks

The authors model analytic techniques for studying accessregulation in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-based broadbandintegrated service digital networks (ISDNs). The traffic in thesenetworks is expected to be highly diverse and bursty, and regulationwill be required as an integral part of congestion control. They study afour-parameter regulator which is a generalized leaky bucket and whichacts as a policing device as well as traffic shaper. The source and theregulator are described by a fluid model in which Markov modulated fluidsources reflect bursty characteristics. It is shown that with properdesign the regulator effectively controls a three-way tradeoff betweenthroughput, delay, and burstiness. Numerical results reveal thatperformance is sensitive to certain source characteristics. Theregulator output, which consists of coupled streams of marked andunmarked cells, is characterized
