The author develops analytic models to analyze the performance ofa broadband packet networks using a new rate-based network accesscontrol known as the distributed source control (DSC). The waiting timedistribution at each queue is determined, as well as the size of theend-to-end window necessary to achieve a given throughput. The optimumrate or throughput in the sense of minimizing the network delay overthroughput is found, and the effects of different burst sizes, cellarrival rate, link utilization, and link capacity on the networkperformance are studied. It is shown that, with proper choice of the DSCcontrol parameters, one can achieve a good grade of service in terms ofcell loss with a small pool of buffers even at high utilization
