In modern building automation systems an increasing number ofdevices with computational facilities exchange data and interoperateusing underlying control networks. Discontinuous and nonlinearprocesses, synchronization effects and delays in communication lead tosystems with highly complex behavior. Analytical methods often do notmeet the demands for the evaluation of such systems. As an alternativeapproach, discrete event simulation gains more and more importance. Theauthors present the development of a distributed software simulatorespecially designed for large automation systems consisting of thousandsof microcontroller based devices. An existing and expanding buildingautomation system used to validate the simulator and which forms a basefor modeling a large system is also described
