Scientific laboratories should now comply with Good LaboratoryPractice (GLP) and the requirement of full auditing. Current pHinstrumentation can not fully provide for this due to the lack ofautomation. Automation will mean that the instrument will be able tomaintain its calibration and work to Standard Operating Procedureswithout deviation. This paper shows how a design specification for anautomated pH instrument has been developed to create a new market in pHmeasurement. It outlines the control and signal conditioning electronicswhich are needed for highly accurate pH measurement. The GLP auditreporting functions shows how it is now possible to produce full workinghistory reports of the instrument. The strict design requirements neededfor cost effectiveness in manufacture, build/service time and formodularity, are also dealt with
