Legislation, certification and standards relating to electricalequipment used in UK gassy mines

The author gives a brief history of the introduction ofelectricity into mines and early research and certification. Statutoryrequirements including: prevention of firedamp ignition; MinesInspectorate pitworthiness scheme; and certification and approval, arediscussed. Recognised national standards for protection against firedampignition and compatibility of apparatus are discussed. The relativeEuropean regulations are also discussed
