Despite the success with the use of computers in the powerindustry, there remains a large class of problems that eludes solutionusing conventional software. These problems are usually solved byexperts, require judgement, based on experience gained over a period oftime and involve imprecise knowledge that cannot be formulated into analgorithm or a mathematical mode. The authors describe how theinterpretation and application of the IEE wiring regulations is justsuch a problem concerning the application of a complex set of rules, procedures and standards, which, by reason of their format, are not easyto apply to specific problems. As such they provide an ideal example ofan area of work where expert systems can assist in the engineeringdesign of electrical installations
