The history of the development of the current NEMA magnet wiredimensional standards and other internationally accepted magnet wiredimensional standards is examined, with emphasis on demonstrating thelogic behind each standard. The dimensions and dimensionally relatedproperties of the most universally accepted magnet wire standards, NEMA,IEC and JIS are compared. The strengths and weaknesses of eachdimensional model currently in use are discussed, both from amathematical modeling and from a practical viewpoint. The advantages ofa mathematical modeling approach to new standard development or existingstandard revision are illustrated.
