The history of the development of the current NEMA magnet wire dimensional standards and other internationally accepted magnet wire dimensional standards is examined, with emphasis on demonstrating the logic behind each standard. The dimensions and dimensionally related properties of the most universally accepted magnet wire standards, NEMA, IEC and JIS are compared. The strengths and weaknesses of each dimensional model currently in use are discussed, both from a mathematical modeling and from a practical viewpoint. The advantages of a mathematical modeling approach to new standard development or existing standard revision are illustrated. A new set of NEMA magnet wire dimensions for size 31-44 AWG based on a mathematical modeling approach is proposed.
