Hybrid excitation synchronous machine(HESM) combines the characteristics of permanent magnet machine and wound field synchronous machine. A novel coordinate structure HESM is proposed and implemented in this paper. The architecture and operation principle of the novel HESM are presented. To predict the electromagnetic performance more accurately, 3D-FEA model of the HESM is built, and finite-element analysis is performed to achieve the magnetic field regulating characteristic of electrical MMFs. Prototype of coordinate structure HESM is developed, and the experimental data agree well with the 3D-FEA results. The air-gap flux can be strengthened or weakened with dc field current so that the induced voltage can be effectively regulated. Both simulation and experimentation confirm the reasonable structure and correct principle of the proposed HESM.
