Rugged adaptive telescope secondaries: experience with a demonstrator mirror

Abstract: There are considerable potential advantages in throughput, polarization and IR emissivity of performing the adaptive correction at the telescope secondary. However, reliability and safety are key issues. This paper explores a sound engineering approach which is rugged, safe and provides a level of redundancy. A 7-actuator demonstrator is described, together with first results from laboratory testing. !6
