Information loss recovery for block-based image coding techniques: a fuzzy logic approach

Abstract: A new technique to recover the information loss in ablock-based image coding system is developed in thispaper. The proposed scheme is based on the fuzzy logicreasoning and can be divided into three main steps: (1)hierarchical compass interpolation/extrapolation in thespatial domain for initial recovery of lost blocks thatmainly contain low-frequency information such as smoothbackground; (2) coarse spectra interpretation by fuzzylogic reasoning for recovery of lost blocks thatcontain high-frequency information such as complextextures and fine features; (3) sliding windowiteration in both spatial and spectral domains toefficiently integrate the results obtained in step (1)and (2) such that optimal results can be achieved interms of surface continuities on block boundaries andthe established inference rules. The proposed method,suitable for recovering both isolated and contiguousblock losses, provides a new approach for errorconcealment of block-based image coding systems such asthe JPEG coding standard and vector quantization basedcoding algorithms. The principle of the proposed schemecan also be applied to block-based video compressionschemes such as the H.261, MPEG, and HDTV standards.Simulation results are presented to illustrate theeffectiveness of the proposed method. !9
