Abstract: A digital speckle correlation method based on principle of area correlation in pattern recognition technique is proposed. The effect of speckle displacement gradients on correlation is neglected, only displacements are taken into account. It simplifies the correlation iterative process and saves computer run time. The selection of correlation function, the reliability of search recognition, and the sensitivity of the method are discussed. The rigid body motion and strain measurement test were done to verify the method. Application examples are given on measuring fluid velocity field and forging deformation. The method also was used to process photographs of very high magnification taken by scanning electron microscope. These results demonstrate that it has the potential to be an quantitative measuring tool for micromechanics.!8
