This paper is an overview of Simulation Toolkit of Electrical Power Systems (STEPS). STEPS is an open-source toolkit designed for the education of power system simulation. STEPS has an independent kernel which is coded in C++ to achieve better computational efficiency. STEPS also provides a python module named stepspy to provide higher-level functions to simplify the operations. Power flow solution is implemented and options are included in STEPS to maintain a balance between speed and convergence. Based on the power flow solution, dynamic simulation of large-scale systems with renewable sources is also implemented in STEPS. Abundant additional options are provided to achieve better accuracy and speed. Detailed steps to install STEPS, approaches to use stepspy, and the way to use Python paralleling computing are discussed. Cases are given to show the performance of the power flow options provided in STEPS. Dynamic simulation and efficiency of Python parallel when generating samples for research are also presented in this paper.
