Emulation of Microgrids for Research and Validation of Control and Operation Strategies

The term microgrid is used to describe the concept of a local grid consisting of energy sources, storage facilities and consumers in various energy sectors, which operates with or without external grid connection. This structure creates a variety of flexibility options in operation. The overwhelming majority of studies in the literature work with abstract simulation models on a conceptual level. However, the transfer of the very promising results into real applications and industrial products is still associated with great uncertainties and risks. To fill this gap, the Microgrid Laboratory (μG-Lab) is being established which will help validating microgrid control and operation schemes in a flexible, real but isolated system. After a brief overview of microgrids the components of the μG-Lab will be described. The μG-Lab is a research infrastructure that is being installed until 2022.
