RCH-LEACH: Residual Energy based Cluster Head Selection in LEACH for Wireless Sensor Networks

Information sensing in an energy-efficient manner is the prime object of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). WSN consist of randomly deployed sensor nodes, which are distributed into different clusters using different techniques of clustering. These sensor nodes sense the information from the surrounding environment. In WSN, energy saving is the prime task, and Cluster Head (CH) selection plays an important role in this. The CH selection is based on various parameters e.g., node's energy, Euclidean distance and randomness. In this paper, we are proposing a Residual Energy based Cluster Head Selection in LEACH (RCH-LEACH) algorithm for stabilizing the formation of clusters in the network. For CH selection, this algorithm used few additional parameters e.g., threshold energy, residual energy of the nodes, and the optimum number of clusters. In terms of FND (First Node Die), RCH-LEACH enhances the network lifetime (i.e., improvement of 15% & 10% as compared to LEACH and E-LEACH algorithms respectively). We have graphically described that RCH-LEACH stabilizes the total number of clusters formation in the network as compared to older algorithms.
