A novel triggering technique for complex waveform based on the Hamming distance

In conventional triggering technique of digital storage oscilloscope based on voltage comparison, triggering some kinds of complex waveforms such as frequency or amplitude modulated signal is a challenge. Usually, users would observe the phenomenon of unstable display of complex waveforms. To circumvent this challenge, this paper presents a novel triggering technique for complex waveforms by leveraging the similarity measure based on the Hamming distance. Furthermore, the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed technique are validated by simulation and compared with the other counterparts. Hardware implementation is demonstrated on a field programmable gate array, and the results indicate that the technique is the improvement and extension of the original voltage comparison technique.
