An improved auxiliary equation method for solving the nonlinear equations is introduced by means of computer technologies in this paper; the method has been proved to be effective and can help us to seek more exact solutions of nonlinear equations according to different parameters. We use it to solve the higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation. More exact solutions including periodic wave solutions, solitary wave solutions and rational function solutions et al are obtained. These exact solutions will be helpful to understand the physical and corresponding dynamical behaviors of real-life physical problems. The method can also be applied to other similar nonlinear equations.
