Wireless sensor networks are powered by batteries and hence there is a need to prolong their lifetime by low power consumption. This paper proposes a modified approach to Sleep Scheduling Mechanism with Particle Swarm Optimization (MSSM-PSO) in wireless sensor networks. The redundant nodes, determined by computing the network coverage, are scheduled into hibernation state. Simulation results show that this approach reduces the energy consumption of the nodes while ensuring sufficient coverage.
