Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) comprises of spatially distributed, miniature size autonomous nodes, in which generally batteries are used as a power source. WSN are widely used in environmental monitoring, disaster management, unmanned aerial vehicle, health care monitoring and military applications, etc. In the cluster-based architecture of WSN, all sensed data from various nodes are finally transmitted to the base station (BS), via Cluster Head (CH) for further processing and various decision making. Distance between Cluster Heads (CH) and the base station are the major factors for the energy utilization of cluster heads. Because with an increase in distance from BS, the energy consumption of CH also increases. Base Station positioning, is an effective technique for enhancement of the lifetime and performance of the wireless sensor networks. In this work, a weight-based novel approach has been proposed to get the optimum position of the base station. The simulation results of the proposed algorithm are assessed for a wide range of node densities. The results are found as the optimum position of the base station, consequently, energy consumption has been reduced and the network lifetime significantly enhanced.
