This paper presents design procedure of voltage dimmable electronic ballast (e-ballast) for Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) based on recently developed wattage independent lamp model. As the voltage dimmable e-ballast topology, a series parallel resonant inverter (SPRI) fed by a pulse width modulated buck converter is adopted. The buck converter controls the dc input voltage of the SPRI in a closed loop which in turn drives the CFL at desired power level in the range of 40-100%. In this work, e-ballasts are designed for 9W and 11W CFL and their performance analysis are conducted through Simulink simulation. Results show that, maximum deviations of the simulated lamp power from the desired lamp power are 0.89% and 2.05% for 9W and 11W CFLs respectively. Lamp power factor lies close to unity (>0.95) for both the lamps whereas the maximum lamp current THD are found as 17.75% and 22.69% for 9W and 11W CFLs respectively. Comparative study of performance of the voltage dimmable e-ballast with the conventional frequency dimmable e-ballast is also presented.
