A normal household bulb, the incandescent bulb, has a short life and does not give out enough lumens to lighten up a parking garage or a retail store. The gas discharge metal halide lamps provide a much brighter light because they emit thousands of lumens of light at a time. The natural white lamp is a new product which is being launched by Venture Lighting International, due to consumer request. This lamp will operate at 5000 Kelvin color temperature, which would be close to sunlight. Every gas discharge lamp requires a control device termed "ballast", for limiting the current flow into the lamp. It also provides regulation and stability to the lamp which enhances its performance and color efficiency. Lag magnetic ballasts have a superior current crest factor rather than lead magnetic ballasts due to which they provide improved color uniformity to the natural white lamps. The work presented in this thesis involves the design of a quad (four input voltage taps) magnetic dual wattage ballast (termed as "Opti-wave" ballast), which will enable the operation of the natural white lamp (310W) as well as the sodium scandium pulse start metal halide lamp (350W) according to lamp and company specifications. Quad ballast performance physically and electrically will be compared to the quint (five input voltage taps) magnetic lag ballast.
