An output-constrained adaptive control scheme is used to prevent unstart in a scramjet combustor. The scramjet considered is a computational fluid dynamics model of the Hyshot-Ⅱ scramjet. First, open-loop simulations of the scramjet are used to characterize unstart and define a pressure measurement for predicting and preventing unstart. Then, retrospective cost adaptive control is extended to the problem of conflicting commands and enforcing output constraints. Finally, the pressure output is used within RCAC as a constraint for preventing unstart.
