This paper presents a work-in-progress project on the development of a web development attitudes survey (WAS). Built on established attitudes instruments in natural science and computer science, the WAS consists of 35 items to measure 7 constructs of students’ attitudes towards web development: confidence, motivation, gender, usefulness, knowledge & learning style, self-reliance, and context. In a pilot study, we administered an online form of the WAS to the students in a small-size web development course at the beginning and the end of the semester. Comparison between the pre-course and post-course average scores demonstrated noticeable changes in the confidence, knowledge & learning style, self-reliance and context constructs. In the next step we will validate the WAS with a large student cohort.
