Transformers have inherently high power efficiencies compared to the other electrical power apparatuses, however for distribution transformers, practically the energy efficiency is not high, and consequently over the large number of installed distribution transformers in a power system a huge energy losses occur in them over their long lifespan. Ecodesign directive from the European Union defines a framework for the requirements for the environmentally-friendly design of energy consumption-relevant products such as transformers. In this paper an economic and low harmonic loss distribution transformer is proposed for design and production based on Ecodesign directive. A 250 kVA, 20/0.4 kV, Dyn, amorphous symmetric core distribution transformer is designed utilizing multiple design algorithm, complying with one of the three following standards: CC′ class of distribution transformers efficiency (the most efficient level of DIN42500 standard), Ecodesign 2015 directive, and Ecodesign 2021 directive. The maximum permissible current, derating and the remaining life of these three designs under harmonic loading have been calculated. Optimal Distribution Transformer Sizing algorithm (ODTS algorithm) has been employed for economic evaluation of these three designs.
