The use of lasers for bone cutting holds many advantages over mechanical tools, such as more functional cuts and faster wound healing. To avoid undesirable tissue damage, a method to classify the tissue and measured the depth incision is desired. Measurement of crater depth during laser tissue ablation for laser surgery application is still an issue. We monitored crater depth based on Time-of-Flight (ToF) of the measured acoustic shock wave (ASW) during laser tissue ablation. ASW was simultaneously measured by an air-coupled transducer/microphone and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We also investigated the impact of crater depth to the amplitude/pressure of ASW. The noncontact monitoring features will be used as feedback for smart laser surgery.
