Vision systems offer innovative solutions to the manufacturing process. These systems are used in part positioning, robotic guidance and quality control to mention a few. The applied system for this study consists of a robotic arm that needs to get the position (x and y coordinates) and orientation of a component from a vision system. The aim of this study is to create a vision based system to detect and to pick and place predefined components within an assembly line system. Randomly placed components are fed into the system by a conveyor belt and moved into the inspection position. The inspection camera, mounted at a fixed position, and will acquire an image. The extracted features and data from the image are then processed using designed algorithms that pattern match, calculate x and y coordinates and orientation of the components. This data is then sent to a robotic arm which will then pick and replace the component. The results show what randomly placed components’ x and y coordinates and orientation can be determined that could eliminate the need of placement jigs.
