Over the last few decades, voltage step excitation has become increasingly important in the field of saliency based speed sensorless machine control. By regularly interrupting the current controller and applying predefined pulses to the machine, the anisotropy-containing current response is measured and processed to deliver the desired rotor position information. Traditionally, these pulses have been shaped to maximize the accuracy of the position signal, but they have deteriorated at the same time the inverter-machine performance in terms of noise and losses. However, to avoid this effect, it is possible to extract the rotor position information alternatively using the SVPWM states, for which a more complex signal processing is required. This paper will compare the traditional strategy with three SVPWM-based strategies, regarding signal processing and rotor position detection accuracy, and providing experimental measurements carried out in an induction machine used for railway applications.
