Absolute Method of RCS Measurements and Technical Means for its Implementation

It is proposed a method for measuring RCS using GTEM cells. The method is based on the indirect calculations of the scattered field strength of the object under test (OUT) by methods, delivered from emission measurements processing in the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). The combination of the capabilities of GTEM cells for testing the immunity to radiation and for measuring the radiated emission permits to calculate RCS through the evaluation of the cell's S-parameters with the OUT. The advantage of the proposed approach is the possibility of measuring RCS in the low-frequency range of less than 0.5-1 GHz, which is not available with conventional measuring instruments. The experimental measurements performed on spherical reflectors showed that the measurement results are extremely close to theoretical estimates.
