This paper provides the detailed optimal design and construction processes of a 3-phase, 537-V, 5-hp, 24,000-rpm interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors for high speed automatic tapping machine tool applications. To yield the desired operational performance, the fuzzy-based Taguchi's method coupled with the finite element analyses (FEA) to refine the motor structural arrangements have been systematically adopted. Supported by hardware constructions and experimental measurements, the motor performance and design objectives can be successfully confirmed.
