The Other 80 Percent: Strategies for Delegating Design of Nonstructural Systems

The design of nonstructural systems is often delegated by the Structural Engineer of Record to a third-party engineer. This is despite evidence that the seismic performance of nonstructural systems is as consequential to loss of life, repair cost, and downtime as the seismic performance of the structure itself. This paper provides strategies for the Structural Engineer of Record to implement in managing the delegated design of nonstructural systems to achieve nonstructural performance consistent with the overarching performance objectives of the building.
