Variation of ship systems, sub-systems, components, and architectures impact mission capabilities, safety, supply chain complexity and Total Ownership Cost. This paper intends to discuss the impact of variation on ship systems and its impact on systems configuration and configuration management. The paper will discuss an integrated systems level methodology to reduce variation (enhance commonality), streamline the supply chain, and outline the benefits to mission capabilities, safety, system selection decisions and Total Ownership Cost. The paper will make recommendations regarding options for implementation of variation reduction principles across product lines that support enhancing mission capabilities, safety, system selection decisions and Total Ownership Cost.
