This work demonstrated that it was feasible to capture more dilute concentrations of the fluorinated ether anesthetic gases from a hospital ventilation system, using commercial activated carbon. The quantified adsorption capacity was satisfactory for use over a period of several weeks, and it was feasible to use thermal desorption at relatively mild temperatures to regenerate the carbon for re-use. Low temperature condensation of the anesthetics during carbon desorption could recover a substantial fraction, and this may be a basis for the operation of a commercial system. Further work on commercialization and recycling of anesthetic compounds continues.
