摘要

National Science Foundation has awarded a planning grant to establish and put into operation an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) for Solid State Green Power Generation and Storage (CEPS) (www.greenCEPS.com). Mission: CEPS vision and mission is to become a center of excellence in developing eco-friendly, safe, and economically feasible all-solid-state energy storage technology for portable and medical applications, automotive industry, centralized and decentralized electric grids, military applications, and energy security. CEPS mission and sustainability is based on the long-term partnerships between universities, industry, national laboratories, and state, governmental, and federal institutions. Economic relevance: Among industrial markets, the US lithium-ion battery market is expected to reach $90B by 2025 and has the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17% of all battery markets. CEPS will transform the current lithium-ion batteries, which are not safe due to the presence of liquid electrolytes. The benefits of the proposed technology include economic development in the form of a high return rate and revenue, new jobs, and support of broad and diverse sectors of the US economy. Focus areas: At least five US sectors of economy will benefit from this national center's activities: (a) Solid state batteries and energy storage for automotive and other applications; (b) Energy and environment: electrochemical systems for solid state energy storage that are reliable and economically feasible; (c) Materials and advanced manufacturing: novel manufacturing approaches such as plasma enhanced physical vapor deposition, supersonic cold spray, and laser-enhanced deposition applied to solid-state energy storage; (d) Agriculture: eco-friendly energy storage systems incorporated into farm machinery, remote sensing, or integrated with wind/solar systems; (e) Human health: miniaturized and reliable all solid state energy storage systems with long-term prospects for medical applications (f) IT/Cyber Security will benefit by developing predictive materials modeling through advanced computation using new supercomputers sponsored by the NSF. Major Benefits for Industrial Members to join CEPS: (1) Industry-driven fundamental and applied research in solid-state energy storage on pre-competitive basis; (2) NSF standard IP management proven acceptable by many 500 Fortune companies; (3) Cost-effective and highly-leveraged research of the cost (1:12); (4) Access to interdisciplinary faculty teams spanning engineering and science to access cross-cutting advances in solid-state energy storage; (5) Access to research buildings, laboratories, and facilities on four university campuses; (6) Excellent recruiting vehicle for building the future of the company; (7) Semiannual advisory board meetings involving students; (8) Potential access to non-competitive federal/state funding. NSF I/UCRC Foundational/Planning Conference will take place in Rapid City, SD on September 12-13.
