Time Series Analysis of Environmental Changes of Dili Capital in Timor-Leste by using Satellite Remote Sensing and GIS Technology

Dili city, the capital of Timor-Leste, is facing water pollution problem caused by quick population growth and lack of treatment facilities. Even basic data, such as population and water quality change, is not accumulated in the country because of the tragic conflict they suffered. Remote sensing is powerful tool for acquiring data in the past. This study, we estimate the time series of population change in Dili by analyzing land use change of the city using Landsat data. We also estimate chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and suspended solid (SS) concentration in Dili coastal using MODIS data. Using these data, we discuss the relationship between population and water pollution change. Land use for 23 sub-districts in Dili was created for 1986, 1990, 2003, 2009 and 2015, with improve the accuracy of all classified image by texture feature method. Supervised Classification which uses the spectral signature defined in training set perform by Maximum Likelihood. Land use and population relationship analysis using 2010 census subdistrict population data revealed that population can be explained using the area of residents and buildings. The scenes of MODIS data from April to November of each year for analyzing. Finally, the relationship between water quality and population change is revealed.
