A nickel-aluminum-zirconium complex hydroxide (NAZ) was prepared mixing Ni, Al, and Zr in the ratio of 0.9:1.0:0.1 and then calcination at different temperatures was performed. The characteristics (SEM images, X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental distribution, and binding energy etc.) of adsorbents were investigated in this study. A higher amount of phosphate ion was adsorbed by NAZ than by calcined NAZ. These results suggest that the adsorption of phosphate ion is related to the physicochemical properties of the adsorbents. Moreover, we evaluated the adsorption mechanism of phosphate ion by the binding energy and through elemental analysis. After adsorption, the binding energy of phosphorus P(2s and 2p) peaked, and the sulfur peak intensity S(2s) reduced. These results suggest that ion exchange between phosphate ions and sulfate ions is one of the adsorption mechanisms. Finally, to evaluate field applications and eventual commercialization of NAZ, we tested its cytotoxicity on vascular endothelial (BAE) cells. We elucidated that NAZ has a low cytotoxic on BAE cells.
