Over the last few decades, the occurrence of micropollutants in the water environment has become a worldwide issue of increasing environmental concern. Ministry of the Environment of Japan listed 208 items of micropollutants with various chemical properties as "items to be surveyed", which have unknown impact on water environmental risks and human health. Despite of annual survey of these items in public waterbodies since 1999, still 119 items remain to be surveyed due to the lack of established analytical methods. Therefore, in this study, we developed a screening analysis method with HPLC-high resolution mass spectrometry, namely Orbitrap, coupled with solid phase extraction (SPE). Applicability of Orbitrap MS for detection of the items was determined. Optimal HPLC column and SPE cartridge were selected to achieve the best retention, separation and recovery rate of majority of items. 63 out of tested 163 organic items could be detected by developed method. 58 of these detected items were quantifiable while the rest 5 items could be qualitatively detected when using a C18 HPLC column and PPL cartridge in SPE. The developed method was tested on 10 water samples collected from up to down streams of river Arakawa in Japan.
