This paper presents the design of a cross-layer routing protocol utilizing asynchronous low duty cycles and TRIX-MAC. Energy efficiency is a critical issue for WSNs since the lifetime of networks is highly dependent on nodes' residual energy. TRIX-MAC has been designed to minimize energy consumption by predicting a receiver's wake-ups, while a new routing metric, EDW, can reduce waiting time by exploiting sleeping information. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol shows better performance of end-to-end delay and energy consumption over a conventional routing metric. In addition, simulation also shows the receiver initiation in MAC can provide more improvement in delay and energy consumption.
