An improved variable pulse source circuit using avalanche transistors is proposed in this paper. The proposed design, which consists of a digitally controlled DC voltage source, a control circuit and a pulse generating circuit, is modified on basis of conventional pulse generating circuit with avalanche transistors. In this design, the collector-emitter breakdown voltage of the avalanche transistors is adjustable in order to control the output voltage amplitude of the circuit. The repetition frequency of the output signal is altered through changing the frequency of trigger signal, and the width of the output voltage is changed with the capacitance of variable capacitor. The output voltage amplitude of this design can be adjusted from 12.7 V to 70.9 V, the repetition frequency of the output signal changes linearly with the frequency of the trigger signal, and the width of the output voltage can be adjusted from 2 ns to 9.6ns.
